Afterthought Heels : Cut Into your knitting with confidence
Learn how an afterthought heel works by knitting one on a mini sock.
In this practical workshop, we’ll explore the construction of an afterthought heel including how the heel opening is created, how stitches are picked up, and how the heel is shaped and finished.
You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of the construction and the confidence to use the technique in your own sock knitting.

My workshops focus on knitting technique, construction and developing the confidence to make informed decisions about your own knitting.

Getting a great Finish
Colourwork techniques, with a particular focus on intarsia
Short rows for shaping and colourwork
Cables, bobbles and beads
Modular knitting
Sock construction and afterthought heels
Lace and chart reading
Garment construction, fit and simple pattern modifications
Pattern reading and troubleshooting
I’m particularly interested in helping knitters understand what is happening in their work, rather than simply memorising a technique or following instructions step by step.
I’m available to teach for yarn shops, knitting groups, festivals, retreats and other fibre events.
Workshops can be adapted for different class lengths, group sizes and experience levels, from focused technique sessions to longer workshops that allow time to explore construction and develop skills in greater depth.

About Donna
I’m Donna Jones, an independent handknit designer, educator, author and technical editor based in South Wales.
My professional work spans handknit design, pattern writing, technical editing, grading and knitting education. Working on both sides of the pattern — creating them and helping other designers make their instructions accurate and usable — gives me a particularly practical perspective on how knitting patterns, techniques and construction fit together.
My teaching is clear, supportive and rooted in understanding how things work. I want knitters to come away not only able to complete the technique we’ve worked on, but more curious about what their knitting is doing, more confident in solving problems, and better equipped to make informed choices for themselves.
I also love sharing that sense of wonder at just how much you can create with two sticks and a bit of string! The more you understand your knitting, the more freedom you have to experiment, adapt and make it your own — and the more joy there is in the process.
